Vermont eyes benefits of overseas tourists
Created 3/8/2010
When people think of overseas visitors coming to the United States, the common perception may be that these tourists are heading to major destinations like New York City and Washington, D.C., or to some of the country's top national parks, such as the Grand Canyon.
However, a recent media report serves as a reminder that even the smallest states in the nation benefit considerably from the money that international visitors spend when they set out to explore the United States.
According to Vermont's Burlington Free Press, the state's tourism industry is welcoming the passage of new legislation that will help promote U.S. travel to the rest of the world, largely because tourism in Vermont has seen a lull in the number of foreign visitors for much of the past decade, dating back to the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.
Vermont is well known as a leading ski destination, especially for those living on the East Coast. However, the Free Press noted that visitors from Britain, France and other European countries have especially been among those who enjoy taking cruises on Lake Champlain, which separates Northern Vermont from upstate New York.
Overseas visitors, many of whom had the foresight to protect their trip plans with travel insurance, have consistently found worthwhile attractions throughout the rest of the United States when they step off the beaten path as well.
