Hiking and biking near Machu Picchu
Created 7/20/2010
South America affords travelers the chance to engage in some fantastic and unique adventure travel. Whether its rafting down the Amazon or biking in the mountains around Machu Picchu, trips to South America can be once-in-a-lifetime experiences. However, those who wish to engage in these hazardous sports should be sure that their travel insurance plan covers them in case of a medical emergency.
In the city of Cuzco, Peru, travelers can book trips with any number of adventure tourism companies. These groups run excursions into the mountains of Machu Picchu and the nearby Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Hikers should definitely check out the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. While this stone-paved trail can take days to complete, the result is worth it: experiencing the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu in the same way that the Incas did. And will there be a better feeling than completing the trail and taking in the sights of one of the modern wonders of the world?
If they have any energy left, travelers can head up Huayna Picchu, or "Young Mountain," which overlooks the site, to get a rare view of the site. And cycling fans may also be interested in taking a mountain biking tour of the region.
