California dealing with whooping cough epidemic
Created 7/20/2010
California is a popular destination for visitors to the U.S, but those without an adequate travel insurance plan should exercise caution in traveling to the sunny west coast, as the state has declared a whooping cough epidemic.
The state is urging at-risk residents, including pregnant women, elderly, children and infants to get vaccinated for the illness. Almost 1,500 cases of the sickness have been reported so far, nearly five times the total for all of 2009, according to the Los Angeles Times. Infants are especially vulnerable to the disease, and five have died thus far. Since 1996, the disease has only proved fatal to children under three months old, but the sickness can be debilitating to others.
Travelers should purchase health insurance whenever they travel to protect themselves from any local viruses. Differing immune systems related to country of origin means that travelers are more likely to fall sick in foreign countries. So, foreign travelers should be especially careful in traveling to California during this recent outbreak. Fortunately, there are travel insurance plans available that will cover medical costs while on vacation.
