Lost luggage prompts $5 million dollar lawsuit
Created 7/21/2010
It's no secret that airlines frequently lose or damage luggage in transit. When that happened to Tacoma, Washington woman Danielle Covarubbias, she didn't take it lying down.
According to KOMO 4 News, Covarrubias was flying between Seattle and Grand Rapids, Michigan, when American Airlines misplaced her bag, which Covarrubias claims had $800 worth of personal belongings in it. Unlike many lost luggage cases, the airline outright lost her bag and couldn't find it again. When she called the airline and demanded compensation, officials allegedly told her she had no recourse, and refused to refund her baggage fee.
That prompted Covarrubias to rally other slighted passengers and put together a $5 million dollar class-action lawsuit against the airline, demanding that airlines provide compensation to passengers whose luggage they've lost.
It was a sentiment that many interviewed by the news provider agreed with.
"Especially because you do have to pay extra fees now, I think it's their responsibility - that they at the very least should reimburse those fees," said Zac Smith of Tacoma.
Had Covarrubias purchased travel insurance, the $800 worth of clothing and personal belongings in her bag would have been covered by her policy.
