Passenger: United jet went into "free fall"

A United Airlines flight en route to Los Angeles from Washington DC experience severe turbulence near Kansas City, causing the jet to momentarily go into "free fall," according to a passenger. Frequent travelers should ensure they have flight accident insurance in case the worst happens while in the air.

The flight was eventually diverted to Denver International Airport, no doubt disrupting travel plans. The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the incident.

According to the Washington Post, 21 of the flight's 255 passengers received medical attention after the flight eventually landed safely. Four of the injured passengers were flight attendants.

Passenger Deborah Atwood described the scary scene, saying that the plane suddenly jumped, then "fell like an elevator shaft." She observed people thrown from their seats, and the oxygen masks were deployed. After regaining control, the pilot announced the flight's diversion and asked any passengers with medical training to identify themselves.

Flight accidents are unlikely, but its better to be safe than sorry. On the other hand, the practice of diverting flights is more common, and can disrupt travel plans. Trip protection insurance policies ensure that travelers are not fiscally responsible for complications of this nature.
